Subliminal Effort in New KCI PR Campaign or Bored High School Kids?

So the other day I was visiting with Bill Mann who is a local farmer and landowner.  He was giving me deeds for an acre and a half of trail easement.  I want to reemphasize giving as he donated these easements because he understands the value or trails to the Northland and also rides his bike on them. 

He got to asking me about what it would take to develop some of his property into an industrial use north of KCI.  I pulled up the map while we were talking and saw this:

I showed it to Bill and asked him if he or knew if his tenant farmer did it.  He didn't know.  Not sure what it is other than it looks like more free art but check it out yourself.

Now keep in mind I think this is brilliant and probably something I would do except I'd do something like write "Chappaquiddick" if Ted Kennedy was flying into town or do something like this.....

Shoal Creek Parkway Video Tour

I have a handful of downtown urbanists who follow this blog so I thought I would share with them a very crappy video tour of the new Shoal Creek Parkway from Staley High School to North Oak.  I've written about this corridor in the past so I thought I'd expand my blog capabilities by following up on a finished project with video.

What I've learned is that the first try at this turned out crappy because I shot it through a dirty windshield while my wife was driving and into the setting sun all while one of the kids was playing a game on the tablet.  I don't want to burn the gas to shoot it again so you will have to put up with "kindergartner" video quality.

Anyways, I wanted to give those of you south of the river a video tour of the newest parkway in the city so you don't lay awake at night fretting over not having this checked off  your bucket list......

 

I can tell you the next time I do this, I will clean the windshield, take the tablet away, drive away from the sun, and turn on some classic rock for the ambiance.

I'm a One Percenter

Well we checked out that big blue and yellow Swedish store in Merriam Kansas today because we need to buy a bigger kitchen table.  Why do we need a bigger kitchen table?  Well if you haven't heard or noticed it's been quiet on this site the last three weeks.  We had another little loudmouth (#6) and been adjusting to him.  We now need a larger kitchen table.

We figured we'd go during the day while I've taken time off and the first day rush is over.

I can safely say I was unimpressed.  I can also safely say it's not a store for people with large families.  At the time we only had three kids with us.  It was kind of funny watching the urbanites sneering at us reproducers with our little curious minions.  The only way I could have stuck out more is if I showed up wearing flannel, bibs, and a trucker hat backwards.

We only saw one table that would be an option for us.  The Swedes obviously don't have big families as 95% of the kitchen tables were for four people. 

It got me to looking around at the US Census data because I was wondering how many families have six kids nowadays.  I found this table below but it only went up to seven plus members in a household and we have eight.  Turns out I'm a member of the 1%!

For those of you that went to Indiana University you take 1,749,501 households with 7+ and divide by 114,991,725 total households which gives you 1.5% which is close enough to 1% since we have eight.

Anyways, numbers are fun and so are the looks from people when we go anywhere.  It's like a circus car whenever we pull up somewhere.  One after another keep coming out.  These past weeks we've taken the three younger kids out and people make comments like "wow, three little boys" and one of us will follow up with "yep, and we got three more in school" to which the respondent usually is rendered speechless.

Anyways we'll see where the future leads with time and posting frequency.  In the meantime, I need to keep watching parenting videos from America's leading parental figure....

A Meeting Free Day?

Since it seems like everyone is hunkered down waiting for the snow to destroy us, I assume there won't be many meetings today.  Those of you that work for large organizations totally understand this.  How much time is wasted in meetings set up because team players are hard to find in bureaucracies full of silos?

New Years Resolutions 2014-I Can Fix Anything

The kids are starting to take music lessons.  Mrs. Loudmouth might try to teach one of them how to play guitar.  However, the guitar we have is full of busted strings from the poopy children playing with it in the basement over time.

I plan of learning how to fix everything that goes wrong in 2014.  No more money for Mr. Repairman.  With the internet, someone someplace somewhere has written or vlogged about how to fix the issue.

Besides, when you call a repair person out of the phone book-wait, how 1980's.  Try that again.  When you do an internet search, you wind up with who knows what and have to discern if the person you are calling knows that they are doing and aren't going to rip you off. 

If I can electrical wire the house, change a toilet, switch out PC parts, and change the oil/filter in the cars, I'm sure I can figure out how to re-string a guitar.

Besides, you never know if guys like this will show up at the house in a beat up old white van...

Public Art My Style

I wanted to let you know how committed I am to providing relevant and important content on this website. While I was heading downtown to a meeting I noticed something that had to be archived in digital eternity.

As a civil engineer, I find driving along the Broadway Extension one of the most enjoyable experiences. There isn't a prettier stretch of road in the metro.

On one side you have the river with its maritime transportation function. On the other side you have trains with their rail transportation. At the north end you have the water plant with its pipelines. At the south end you have the airport with its air transportation function.

All five modes of civil engineering transport in a 2 mile stretch of road. Nirvana.

While I was admiring that beauty today, I saw something that gave me the laugh that I seriously have been needing lately.

I pulled into the airport and found a space near a hangar to get a picture. Airport scurry had just driven by. I hopped out and got some pictures and got out of there. I was willing to risk a full body cavity search from the TSA for my readers.

The Boat At Tiffany Springs Part 3

I got some up close pictures of the Boat at Tiffany Springs that I haven't had a chance to share.

The boat's been moved off of MoDOT right of way.  Now it sits right in the way of a trail KCMO plans to build in 2014/15. 

We'll see how long it stays.  There are some people who can't stand it.  I don't see how it's any worse than the monster banners or real estate signs littering Ambassador Drive of un-maintained Class C office buildings for sale/lease.

 

Be Zombie Free This Halloween

In case I happen to be driving by the "haunted" Gash Cemetary or the Jesse James Farm on Halloween night,  I want to be prepared to fight any zombies that might be lurking.

Just in case you think I might be losing it (shaddup), I wanted to share with you all that I plan on being Billy Idol for Halloween.  If we have a zombie invasion in the Northland, you can be rest assured that I will be prepared to dance them into oblivion.

Nothing gets rid of zombies faster than a sweaty scrawny white dude busting a move...

Kay Calls It Quits

It's that time of year again. It gets dark at 7. The weather gets cold. The kids are holed up inside...

It's time to head to Metro North Mall for a fun evening of running and hide and seek!

However, it is with sad news that I have to report that the cornerstone Kay Jewelers™ has called it quits at the mall.  Not sure who the security guards are going to chit chat with now.
