One of ways I judge people's character is how they treat other people when no one is looking. I wanted to mention something that happend on one of our recent weekly trips to On The Border™ on Barry Road. When we walk in, it's a caravan of humanity.
One day, former KCMO Parks and Recreation Commissioner John Fierro just happened to be walking up with his wife while our litter was getting out of the car. He opened the door for me as I was carrying the littlest loudmouth. I told him to go ahead since I still had kids in the car. He insisted on holding the door until all of us went inside.
I tried to get him to go ahead and go in since we were going to be slower than he and his wife would be but he refused. That was very classy and polite. Even though he was a Park Commissioner (a very thankless and grueling position), I never interacted with him and he had no idea who we were. He was just some nice dude holding the door and being polite.
In a period where it seems like too many electeds/appointees are narcissitic butt heads, I felt I needed to publicly thank him for showing a servant spirit. It's very revealing how someone who treats others when no one is looking.
If I didn't know who he was, I would have just assumed he was a regular dude. His kindness showed some very real humility and for that I am thankful.
