I've had some friends ask me how I find some of this stuff and this is one time I am asking that of myself. I find something like this when I had some caffeine for dinner and still have a toddler up who won't go to bed and will wake everyone else up in the house with a tantrum if I try to put him in bed and who ends up falling asleep on the couch watching Qubo™ (so I can't watch TV) and I didn't bring anything home to work on. Easiest way to tell those nights is my sentences ramble on in a Dennis Miller like fashion.
I came across a 1912 soil map of Platte County in color and with great resolution. What I found interesting about the map is some of the streets in the area. The Line Creek Trail south of 68th Street follows the old roadbed that I tried showing in red. Route 45/NW 64th/68th Street is shown in purple. Green Hills Road/Waukomis Drive is shown in green. I-29 and I-635 are shown in blue.
I also saw some of the old one room school houses. The Rocky Point School at the south side of Barry Road at Amity still exists I believe. I can't get a good look at it using online mapping but from what I understand the house is still there but with many modifications.
I also tried finding remnants of the Island School south of Thousand Oaks but it's all been flooded and farmed. The Brink School still appears to be there as a private residence and the church across the street appears to still be somewhat of original form.
The Berry School along Green Hills Road is still there and in use as a private residence. This is the only school on this post that isn't in the Park Hill School District. The Prairie Point school is long gone as that is the interchange at Barry Road and I-29.
Again, you explore the map all you want and guess which roads are still around and which ones are not. It is amazing how many of these 100 year old horse paths have been paved and we are still driving on them in the same location.
Since today is Thanksgiving and I am already hearing Christmas carols, I give you this:
