I have to say something about this whole discussion happening about Kemper Arena while it slowly dies.
Reading about the people who want to preserve it as a monument to modern architecture, I ask this: "Who are these people?"
Kemper Arena is the basketball arena equivalent of the old Busch Stadium in St. Louis. Unimaginative, utilitarian, and an eyesore. I only went there once and that was enough.
The only reason to save Kemper Arena in the history of modern architecture is to show future students what happens when you design an inefficient ceiling support structure and make the building out of barn shed tin siding.
When's the demolition contractor starting? I'd like to swing the ball and chain for an hour. Free of charge.
