Those of you that work along the I-29 corridor know what a hassle it can be to get onto I-29 at Tiffany Springs Parkway. The Kansas City Aviation Department, MoDOT, City Council District 2, and the KCI Corridor TIF have partnered together to fund an improvement to the interchange that will be Platte County's first divergent diamond interchange (DDI). The DDI is an interchange where traffic crosses over and drives on the other side of the road to allow free flow turns onto the interstate. Currently one is under construction at I-435 and Front Street. The prime example of why these work a lot better than traditional interchange widening projects can be seen the next time one travels to Branson. MoDOT completed a DDI at Route 13 and I-44 which used to take forever to get through because of the high speed on Route 13, the Wal-Mart on the southwest corner, and an interchange built in the 1960's.
MoDOT has a site which has the details of the project and also includes the display boards from the public meeting. Improvements will include sidewalks and a realignment and finishing of improvements to North Congress so that it will be an urban street with sidewalks, curb and gutter, and streetlights from Tiffany Springs Parkway all the way south to Route 9.
The Platte County Landmark had a nice write up on the project.
In the image below, north is to the the left and east is to the top. The lower left corner of the improvement is where the Cracker Barrell™ and Wendy's™ are located and the lower right corner is where the Ruby Tuesday™ and Waffle House™ are located. The office complexes in the area are on the top of the image.
